Newport and Lincoln Center
HI Everyone!
Hope you're having an amazing summer.
Just a quick note to let you know about two upcoming events.
This Friday August 1, I will be presenting the world premiere of my Charlie Parker project at the Newport Jazz Festival. While we are not playing any of his music, each composition is based on a melody or solo of Parker clearly showing Bird's indelible influence on me and modern music in general. It's a real treat for me to return to an acoustic format with Matt Mitchell on piano, FrançoisMoutin on bass, Rudy Royston on drums, and 20 years young trumpet sensation Adam O'Farrill.
We'll be recording next week for a January '15 CD release on ACT Music.
On August 7, I will be at Lincoln Center Out of Doors for the NYC premiere of Song of the Jasmine withRagamala Dance.
This work for 5 dancers and 5 musicians represents a year long collaboration with choreographers Aparna and Ranee Ramaswamy. The piece premiered in 4 sold out shows at Walker Art Center this past May. I'm thrilled as both composer and performer that NYC audiences will have a chance to see and hear it. There is also an artist talk with myself and the Ramaswamys the evening before at The Asia Society.
In other news, Gamak did a really nice Canadian Festival tour in June and then headed to Europe for shows at the absolutely gorgeous Schloss Elmau spa and the lonstanding Pori Jazz Festival in Finland.
Here's a video from the Montreal Jazz Festival:
Thanks for reading. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Best Wishes,
