Newport and Lincoln Center

HI Everyone!

Hope you're having an amazing summer.

Just a quick note to let you know about two upcoming events.

This Friday August 1, I will be presenting the world premiere of my Charlie Parker project at the Newport Jazz Festival. While we are not playing any of his music, each composition is based on a melody or solo of Parker clearly showing Bird's indelible influence on me and modern music in general. It's a real treat for me to return to an acoustic format with Matt Mitchell on piano,Fran├žois Moutin on bass, RudyRoyston on drums, and 20 years young trumpet sensation AdamO'Farrill.

We'll be recording next week for a January '15 CD release on ACT Music.

On August 7, I will be atLincoln Center Out of Doors for the NYC premiere of Song of the Jasmine withRagamala Dance.

This work for 5 dancers and 5 musicians represents a year long collaboration with choreographers Aparna and Ranee Ramaswamy. The piece premiered in 4 sold out shows at Walker Art Center this past May. I'm thrilled as both composer and performer that NYC audiences will have a chance to see and hear it. There is also an artist talk with myself and the Ramaswamys the evening before at The Asia Society.

In other news, Gamak did a really nice Canadian Festival tour in June and then headed to Europe for shows at the absolutely gorgeous Schloss Elmau spa and the lonstanding Pori Jazz Festival in Finland.

Here's a video from the Montreal Jazz Festival:

And another from the Rex in Toronto:

After that run, we'll be at the DC Jazz Fest on June 29 in a double bill with Etienne Charles. More info here.

In other news . . .

The premiere performances of "I Will Not Apologize for My Tone Tonight" for PRISM Saxophone Quartet were a great success.

Look for an album out this Fall and please enjoy this video for now:

The premiere shows of Song of the Jasmine with Ragamala Dance at Walker Art Center were overwhelmingly amazing. I don't have any video to share yet but we'll be at Lincoln Center Out of Doors in August.

My album Apex with Bunky Green was voted one of the Top 50 Essential Alto Albums of all time by an esteemed cast of fellow alto saxophonists in this month's JazzTimes.

Lastly, Gamak won International Ensemble of the Year at the ECHO Jazz Awards, Germany's Grammys. I wasn't able to attend the ceremony on May 24, but I sent this acceptance speech video. The main reason I'm including it here is that my son Talin is so cute!

Thanks for reading! Enjoy your Summer!

Best Wishes,

Rudresh
